چکیده

We report on the discovery of a variable radio source, VLA J070238.0+385044, associated with the proposed x-ray counterpart, 1SAX J0702.6+3850 of GRB 980329. The source was monitored from one day after the burst to one month later at its variability, compactness and spectrum, we identify VLA J070238.0+385044 as the afterglow from GRB 980329. We interpret the rapid flux density variations as interstellar scintillation and the sharp turnover in the radio spectrum below 13 GHz as arising from synchrotron self-absorption. This suggests that the angular diameter of the fireball from GRB 980329 was of order a few microarcseconds in the first two weeks. The absence of a readily detectable afterglow in the optical, but clear detections in both the radio and infrared, can be understood as the result of extinction by dust. In this context it is interesting to note that half of all well-localized gamma-ray bursts have no optical counterpart. Based on our study of GRB 980329 we suggest that the progenitors of a sizable fraction of gamma-ray bursts are associated with regions of moderate to high gas density.

X–Ray Observations of γ–Ray Burst Afterglows

The discovery by the BeppoSAX satellite of X-ray afterglow emission from the γ-ray burst which occurred on 28 February 1997 produced a revolution in our knowledge of the γ-ray burst phenomenon. Along with the discovery of X-ray afterglows, the optical afterglows of γ-ray bursts were discovered and the distance issue was settled, at least for long γ-ray bursts. The 30 year mystery of the γ-ray b...

DISCOVERY AND REDSHIFT OF AN OPTICAL AFTERGLOW IN 71 SQUARE DEGREES: iPTF13BXL AND GRB 130702A

We report the discovery of the optical afterglow of the γ-ray burst (GRB) 130702A, identified upon searching 71 deg2 surrounding the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) localization. Discovered and characterized by the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory, iPTF13bxl is the first afterglow discovered solely based on a GBM localization. Real-time image subtraction, machine learning, human vetti...

X-ray Afterglow Light Curves : toward Standard Candle ?

We investigate the clustering of afterglow light curves observed at X-ray and optical wavelengths. We have constructed a sample of 61 bursts with known distance and X-ray afterglow. This sample includes bursts observed by BeppoSAX, XMM-Newton, Chandra, and SWIFT. We correct the light curves for cosmological effects and compare the observed X-ray fluxes one day after the burst. We check for corr...

Fast X-ray Transients and Gamma-ray Bursts: Constraints on Beaming

The detection of x-ray afterglows of gamma-ray burst (GRB) sources has enabled the optical discovery that GRBs are at cosmological distances, which confirms that the enormous luminosities required must produce a relativistically expanding fireball. It is not yet clear if this expansion is quasi-spherical or beamed, or if the beaming differs between the prompt GRB and afterglow, although the dif...
